PR Card Renewals, Replacements & PRTD

Permanent residents need a valid PR card (or a PRTD when abroad) to return to Canada by commercial carrier. Renewal and PRTD applications also test whether you meet the residency obligation of two years in every five.

PR Card Services: common questions

Does an expired PR card mean I've lost PR status?

No. PR status does not expire with the card. You remain a permanent resident until status is formally lost, but you may need a valid card or PRTD to travel back to Canada.

What if I haven't met the two-year residency obligation?

A PRTD or renewal can still be considered, and humanitarian factors may be weighed. This needs careful preparation.
